Admission of Pupils at Start of Year 7 in September 2012
The planned admissions number for Year 7 for the year commencing 1st September 2012 will be 200. Boys who attain the required standard in the arrangements for selection by reference to ability will be eligible to be considered for admission to the school.
The Governors have agreed with Wirral Local Authority that the officers of the Local Authority will administer the process of selection in accordance with the procedures described in this booklet.
Preference forms for admission to secondary schools will be made available to all parents of pupils in the final year of their primary school. The forms will need to be returned to Wirral Local authority.
B. THE PROCESS
The assessment is based upon the results of two verbal reasoning tests. The tests do not take into account what pupils have learnt at primary school. They have been designed to predict a pupil’s potential performance at secondary school and
so preparation for the verbal reasoning tests, apart from the practice tests, is not necessary. Schools or the Wirral’s Children and Young People Department (CYPD) will, however, provide a familiarisation opportunity.
Pupils take two verbal reasoning tests in the final year of primary education. So that children are not disadvantaged because of their date of birth, in each case the score is adjusted to take account of each child’s exact age in years and months to determine a Standardised Age Score (SAS). The two test scores are then added together. Children who reach the required score will be deemed to have reached the grammar school standard.
In some cases parents may feel that certain factors may have affected the child’s academic performance (for example, if his or her education has been severely disrupted because of ill health, change of schools, or any other case). If this does apply it is important that you should tell your child’s present Headteacher, in writing. The information will be considered by the Independent Assessment Board if the child’s case is referred to the Board.
For children whose cases are referred, the Board will see:
1. The child’s verbal reasoning test scores.
2. The representations made by the primary school Headteacher with supporting evidence if necessary.
3. Confidential information from you and reports from other professional agencies such as educational psychologists, social workers, and doctors.
The Board then uses its professional judgement to decide whether the evidence clearly shows that the results of the verbal reasoning tests did not truly reflect the child’s ability. The Board will decide in each individual case whether or not the child has reached the grammar school standard.
At the end of this process, we will have a complete list of the children who have reached the grammar school standard. This does not necessarily mean that they will be allocated a place at Calday Grange Grammar School; that will depend upon the number of preferences that we have for the school. If the school is oversubscribed the governors will use other criteria to decide which children should be given places. Any offer of a place may be withdrawn if it comes to light that a parent has given misleading information in order to secure an offer If the school is oversubscribed - priority will be determined in the following order:
1. To Looked After Children.
2. To those children with a valid medical or social reason supported in writing by a doctor, social worker or appropriate professional person.
3. To those children who will have a sibling at the school at the time of admission. A sibling is defined as a brother or sister by the same parents, or half or step brothers or sisters living in the same household.
4. By reference to geographical factors, preference will be given to children with the shortest distance to the school as measured by the Local Authority computer mapping system.
Late applications will be considered in accordance with the Local Authority’s Coordinated Scheme of Admissions.
The Local Authority will inform all parents of school allocations on the nationally agreed date, currently 1st March.
Should the School be oversubscribed for places in Year 7, in accordance with the School Admissions Code of Practice 3.18, the School will maintain a waiting list for pupils who have achieved the standard but have not been offered a place. This waiting list will be ranked according to the Admission criteria and parents will be informed of their child’s position on the waiting list. The list will not be operated for longer than the end of the Autumn term.

Each year we receive early requests for information about enrolment. This information is intended for parents who have sons who will be starting their secondary education in September 2012 (children who are in Year 6 during the 2010/11 school year.
Please take your time to look through our website; it will give you a flavour of how much goes on at Wirral Boys both on the academic and extra-curricular sides. In our Ofsted inspection, a parent commented: “Wirral Grammar is an excellent school’; the boys are not only given an excellent academic grounding, but they gain independence and responsibility, my son is extremely happy and settled here.” Of course, the best way to get to know a school is to have a look around. You will find information in this document about our Information Evening, our Open Evenings and our Open Morning
We have provided this guide to assist parents through what is, understandably, a potentially complicated process. If you would like to have it explained to you, or if you require any assistance, you are welcome to contact Mrs Tanya Fry (School Admissions Manager) on 0151 644 0908.
Applying from Wirral
Parents of pupils in Wirral should refer to the „Secondary Education in Wirral 2012? guide for parents which will become available from around September 2011. It is made available to parents of Year 6 pupils at primary school and will also be available on-line. The admissions portal is set up through Wirral Council and the link is: http://www.wirralmbc.gov.uk/Admissions/index.asp
Although we are a Foundation School our admissions process is managed by Wirral Local Authority. The „Secondary Education in Wirral 2012? publication will explain how to go about selecting your choice of school and the arrangements for testing. There are two important dates for parents to be aware of. If you would like your son to sit the 11+ test, a Test Request Form (which will be supplied with the „Secondary Education in Wirral 2012? pack) first needs to be completed and returned to the Local Authority by the specified date. This purpose of this form is to allow the Local Authority to order the correct number of test papers. Copies of this form will be available from school.
To make your choice of school, the School Preference Form (which will be supplied with the „Secondary Education in Wirral 2012? pack) needs to be completed and returned to your primary school by the specified date. If you do not receive this form you can contact the Local Authority on 0151 606 2000. Alternatively you can contact school on 0151 644 0908 and ask for Mrs Tanya Fry who will assist you. You are welcome to register an email address with us and we will forward you regular up-dates regarding the admission process.
Each year the Local Authority organises an Admissions Portal: http://www.wirralmbc.gov.uk/Admissions/index.asp. Through this you will be able to down-load and submit your preference on-line. Preference forms usually need to be returned at the end of October, but remember, you need to return your Test Request Form before the end of September.
Applying from outside Wirral
If you are applying from Cheshire, you will need to follow the admissions process for Cheshire. The following link will take you to the Cheshire Authority admissions guidance: http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/EducationAndLearning/schools/admissions/applying_online.htm
Even if you are applying from outside Wirral you will need to return a Test Request Form by the date specified by Wirral Local Authority. This form can be obtained through Mrs Tanya Fry here at the school or alternatively direct from Wirral Local Authority. The purpose of the test form is to let Wirral Local Authority know how many test papers need to ordered, it is important that this form is completed and returned otherwise there will be no record of your son?s name for the purpose of arranging the test.
Testing Arrangements
If your son is in a primary school in Wirral, it is likely that he will take the 11+ test at his school; your son?s primary Headteacher can confirm this for you. Boys who live in Cheshire would take the test at a specified test centre and this is often at Wirral Grammar School. The assessment is a verbal reasoning one and each boy sits two tests. There are also practice test days which follow exactly the same procedure as the actual test themselves.
