THE TEST
The test will be held on the morning of Saturday 12 November 2011.
Your child will sit two tests of approximately 45 minutes.
The papers will be divided into smaller, individually timed sections that test:
Verbal reasoning
Non verbal reasoning
Mathematics and
Reading comprehension/literacy skills
Children will write their answers in the test booklets and most of the test questions will be multiple choice. The marks will be standardised to take account of differences in age and then added together.
A range of publications designed to assist preparation for school admission tests is available from leading bookshops.
Neither the Foundation Office nor any of the schools keep past papers and these are not available from other sources.
Intensive coaching or tuition is not in the long term best interests of your child. The Foundation of the Schools of King Edward VI In Birmingham is in no way connected to, nor does it endorse or recommend, the services of any organisation or agency purporting to offer tuition and/or revision courses for children to assist in preparing them for school entrance tests.
The admission process for year 7 entry in September follows the timetable below each year, with only minor changes in specific deadlines. During March, once these deadlines and dates have been agreed, they will be entered in the date column on the right hand side.

The Governors have agreed a planned admissions limit of 130 students in Year 7 each September, with the places allocated on the basis of the School's 11+ arrangements. Other places occasionally become available in other year groups and parents of older children should contact the School to receive up to date information. Entry to the main school is for boys only, however the Sixth Form is co-educational and therefore entry by girls is encouraged.
A very large number of applications are made for entry at 11+. The admission process for boys at 11+ begins in September, when information leaflets about admission are available and Open Evenings are held to encourage parents and students to visit the School and learn something about its approach to education. Contact before that date about the tests can be made with the School. Parents, including those living in other education authorities, need to register for the tests with the School and must also complete the relevant education authority school preference form.
The admission tests consist of a verbal reasoning test paper and short English and Maths tests, the latter being used when considering borderline cases. The examination centres for the 11+ are Handsworth Grammar School and King Edward VI School, Handsworth (the girls' grammar school in Rose Hill Road). Great care is taken in ensuring that the tests are administered fairly. After marking, standardisation and consideration by the School, offers of places are sent out by the local authority. A small number of other offers may be made at a later date.
If you feel that there are any special circumstances that should be considered with regard to your son and 11+ tests, we would like to know about these as soon as possible.

All applicants for a place in Year 7 at King Edward VI Aston School will need to complete a 'Grammar School of King Edward the Sixth' test registration form, available from the school or by post from the Admissions Officer, Schools of King Edward the Sixth Foundation Office, Edgbaston Park Road, Birmingham B15 2UD. Alternatively, you can apply on-line at www.kingedwardthesixth.org
All applicants, whether they live in Birmingham or not, will also need to complete their home Local Education Authority (LEA) preference form. Up to six schools can be named on this form in a ranked order of preference. It is important not just to write King Edward VI Schools as each of the King Edward VI Schools counts as a separate choice (Aston, Camp Hill, Handsworth or Five Ways). If a school is not listed on the LEA form you cannot be offered a place.
Only the LEA will know the rankings. Schools in Birmingham will not know whether applicants have ranked them first or last when making their offers.
In considering applications, all schools will apply their own admissions criteria. The Grammar Schools of King Edward VI only consider entrance test scores and rank children according to their test scores. Other schools may rank children on distance from the school to their applicant's home.
All rankings will be submitted to the LEA. If a child meets the criteria for two or more schools, the LEA will offer a place at the school ranked highest on the LEA form. Parents will only receive one offer.
If a grammar school is the most desired option, it should be named as the most preferred school/s on the LEA preference form. If a grammar school is put first on the LEA form, but a child is not successful in the entrance test, it will not put at risk the chance of being offered a place at any other school listed providing that the LEA has an equal preference system.

All places at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys are FREE and admission to the school is solely on the basis of selection tests organised by the King Edward Foundation and held each November in the year prior to entry to the school, i.e. usually when boys are in Year 6, the final year, of their primary school. Details of the tests and test registration form are available from the school or the Foundation Office. Camp Hill draws its pupils from a wide geographical area and applications are very welcome from pupils who live outside Birmingham. The number of boys who applied for 2010 entry with King Edward VI Camp Hill Boys as first choice was 839 (748 in 2009). Number of appeals 16. Number of successful appeals 3. The school’s published admission number (PAN) for year 7 is 93.
How to Apply
Parents who wish their son to apply for a place at the King Edward VI grammar schools in Birmingham must complete two forms.
The test registration form for entry to the King Edward VI grammar schools in Birmingham (details given below). Please put the King Edward's grammar school you most want your son to go to first on this form and then return it to the Foundation Office (address provided on form) by Friday 1 October 2010 at the latest.
You must also complete the form which should have been sent to you by your Local Authority (LA). It is especially important for parents who live outside Birmingham to note that if they are applying to King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys, they must name our school on the form they send to their Local Authority.
