Adams' Grammar School

One of our stated aims is "to provide a grammar school education to pupils (boys aged 11 - 18 years and girls 16 - 18) who come within the top 25% of the population academically". As a state school educational tuition is free to all pupils.

For entry to Year 7 boys should have passed, or be approaching, their eleventh birthday on 31st August 2012. There are on average 4 applications for every available place in Year 7.

We use an entrance test designed to measure academic ability. For entry in September 2011 and onwards the test will consist of two forty-five minute papers which assess numeracy, literacy and problem-solving skills. Some of the questions are in multiple choice format. Please click on the icon at the bottom of the page for a sample of typical questions candidates can expect to see in the test.

The examinations for entry to the school at age 11+ in September 2012 will be held at school on Friday 25th November 2011.

Every year the test content changes to ensure the tests remain fresh and engaging for the children who take them.  We believe that they offer a fair assessment for all children, whatever their educational background, as far as this is possible.  There are no commercially available resources that can be used for preparation.  We believe that preparation for Key Stage 2 tests will provide suitable experience for tests of this duration (although the format and content will be different.)

Those who cannot come on the appointed day, through illness or some other good reason, will be invited to come to the school on another day in school time. Parents have the right to apply to Adams' Grammar School irrespective of their address in the United Kingdom. Applicants from overseas must hold a full British or EU passport and have a guardian in this country.

In addition to the School's own application form you are required to complete the application form which is obtainable from your Local Authority. This should be returned directly to your LA. If Adams' Grammar School is your first choice of school and your son is not offered a place, your second choice of school will be considered as your first choice by your LA.

To apply for a day or boarding place you should complete a Supplementary Information Form which can be printed from this website or obtained from the school office. It should be returned to the school office by Friday 28th October 2011. You should also complete the Application form provided by your Local Authority and return this directly to them. Applications received after that date will be treated as late and this may subsequently affect the applicant's chance of being offered a place.

Sixth Form applicants should obtain the separate Sixth Form Prospectus from School and complete the Sixth Form Application Form. Different dates apply.  There are also different visiting arrangements, with dedicated prospective sixth form visits in the late Autumn Term and early Spring Term.

To apply for a boarding place in a year group other than year 7 you should complete the separate Supplementary Information Form (Years 8/9/10) and return it directly to Adams' Grammar School. Also an application form obtainable from your Local Authority, which should be returned directly to the LA.
